The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that about 25.9 million Americans, 10% of all children, are affected by asthma and breathing problems. Inhaled steroids have been traditionally used to treat the condition but have a lot of bad side effects. A new research study showed that engaging in breathing techniques can reduce the need for asthma reliever therapies by over 50%. The journal Thorax published information that practicing two breathing techniques decreased symptoms, and improved lung function and improved quality of life for over 57 adults with mild asthma.
Techniques in Breathing for Wellness
One technique focused on flat nasal breathing with lengthened exhaling. The second technique included general upper body exercises combined with relaxation. Many participants who needed conventional relief and used a preventer at least four times a week were randomly given one of the breathing techniques.
In addition, those who practiced their breathing exercises twice each day for about 25 minutes over a period of 30 weeks cut their daily inhaler use to one inhalation every third day. As a result, prevention doses were also decreased by 50% by the end of the study. It is a great feeling to not have to depend on any help to manage your breathing.
Christine Jenkins is a Professor at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. She found that the overall use of relief medication was reduced by 86% in both exercise categories. In addition, she noticed quick improvement within only weeks of starting the process. As a result, she wrote that over an eight-month period, breathing techniques were helpful in managing mild daily asthma symptoms.
